1. Hooking up your modem, phone & computer

A. Plug your Virgin Broadband modem into a power point.

B. Plug your home phone into the modem. There's no need for a wall socket for the phone.

C. Connect the modem to your PC or Mac with the white Ethernet cable provided (under the packaging in the box).

D. Set up WiFi later if you want the freedom to move around with a laptop. This is explained in detail in the User Guide.

2. For better reception position your modem

Just like a mobile phone, the signal strength is indicated by the bars on the modem screen. If the bars are low OR you are not getting UMTS or HSDPA on the screen, try moving the modem up higher or near a window. If you continue to receive a GPRS signal that means you're not getting broadband speeds and you're entitled to return the modem under the 30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee. If you have line interference like a buzzing sound on the line, just move the modem away from the computer.

3. To view your modem settings log into the modem

To view or change the settings of your modem, open a web browser (like Internet Explorer) and type in http://192.168.1.1. The first time you access the modem's management console, you will need to specify a password. On subsequent logins, the default username is admin. The User Guide contains a wealth of information on how to use the management console.

4. Setting up your email account

When you get online for the first time, you'll create your first Virgin Broadband email address and password, which will be 'name'@virginbroadband.com.au These details are used to access webmail and usage. Make a note of these details inside the back of the User Guide under My Passwords.

5. Monitor your webmail (email)

It's a good idea to check your Virgin Broadband inbox fairly regularly as it is the address we will use to correspond with you via email and it stores up 10MB worth of emails. If your email box is full you will not be able to receive any more messages. Delete emails to make space and continue email use. Also, if configuring an email program (like Outlook) to work with your Virgin email account, make sure to use your full email address ('name'@virginbroadband.com.au) when asked for a username.

6. Transferring your existing home number to Virgin Broadband

To transfer your existing home number to your Broadband At Home service, go to the My Account section of our web site and log in using your Broadband At Home phone number and the six digit Account PIN you created when you signed up. We recommend you try our phone and broadband service for 30 days first, to ensure you are satisfied.

Note: Once you submit a request to transfer your number, the balance of your 30-day satisfaction guarantee will be forfeited.

7. Ensure you have WIFI security enabled in your modem's security settings

If you want to connect to your modem using wireless access, you should set up the wireless security settings. We recommend the WEP setting in the modem management console to prevent others downloading through your connection. To access the console, open a browser type: http://192.168.1.1 and click "Quick setup" to access wireless security settings.

8. Using multiple phones

To use multiple phones, we suggest you purchase cordless phones with a single base station and multiple handsets. Simply connect the phone base station to the modem, and any extra handsets can be placed anywhere there's a power outlet!

9. Set up your voicemail

Set up your FREE home phone voicemail by dialling '212'. The phone will have a 'stuttered' dial tone when you have a message.

10. We require your direct debit form

Please complete your Direct Debit form, which is inside the box, as this payment method is required for Broadband At Home. You'll still receive a bill beforehand each month and the direct debit is processed on the due date of the bill.
